Heating Stove
The heating stove next to the radio is a Warm Morning coal stove. Coal was obtained from local mines in Durango. The coal supply was one of the reasons the city is located where it is today. The railroads and smelters needed coal in the 1880s, later the electric plant used it as well. During the Depression, there are stories of local children walking up and down the tracks, picking up any coal that fell off passing trains.
