Silverton
William Henry Jackson photo of a train on the Highline headed for Silverton. Catalog number: 90.13.5
Silverton was established in 1874 to support mining operations in the surrounding district. Located in the caldera of an ancient volcano at 9305 feet in elevation, transportation in and out of the town is difficult to this day. Its fortunes rose and fell with the price of silver, gold and other precious metals. Mining operations ceased in 1991.
