Ski Story title

The extension of the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad, first into the new town of Durango in 1881 and later into Silverton in 1882, revolutionized transportation. For the most part, skiing was no longer a necessity for transportation in the winter and became a popular pastime. But some years, like the winter of 1883 – 1884, there was so much snow that people resorted again to skis and sleighs.

During the 1930s, Durango skiers would grab their skis and head up Highway 550. Some would ski down from Coal Bank Pass and hitchhike back to their cars. Cascade Village now stands at what was a popular ski hill called Cascade Meadows. About 17 miles north of town, just above the Lechner’s ranch, Chipmunk Hill also became a popular place to ski.
